Worked example: €36,000 salary
Old-age insurance is 6.90% of €36,000 (€2,484.00) plus 0.40% on all pay (€144.00), a total of €2,628.00. Agirc-Arrco is 3.15% (€1,134.00) plus the CEG at 0.86% (€309.60), a total of €1,443.60. CSG and CRDS are charged on 98.25% of gross pay, which is €35,370.00: CSG at 9.20% is €3,254.04 and CRDS at 0.50% is €176.85, a total of €3,430.89. Net taxable pay is €36,000 - €4,071.60 - €2,405.16 (the deductible part of the CSG) = €29,523.24, about €2,460.27 a month. That falls in the 5.3% band of the default grid, so €1,564.73 is withheld. Take-home pay is €36,000 - €2,628.00 - €1,443.60 - €3,430.89 - €1,564.73 = €26,932.78 a year, or about €2,244.40 a month.
This example is checked against a hand-calculated test in our code. It assumes a non-manager employee in metropolitan France and no extra deductions.
How we calculate this
Old-age insurance is 6.90% up to the social security ceiling (€48,060 a year in 2026) plus 0.40% on all pay. Agirc-Arrco is 3.15% up to the ceiling and 8.64% from one to eight ceilings, plus the CEG (0.86% and 1.08%) and the CET (0.14% on all pay once pay exceeds the ceiling). CSG (9.20%, of which 6.80% is deductible) and CRDS (0.50%) are charged on 98.25% of gross pay up to four ceilings. Income tax is withheld at the default rate from the official grid in force from 1 May 2026, chosen from your monthly net taxable pay and applied to the whole amount.
It is an estimate. It does not include supplementary health insurance (mutuelle) or employer provident cover, Alsace-Moselle, overseas grids, a personalised withholding rate, short-contract allowances, the APEC contribution for managers, tax credits and reductions, or the year-end income tax return. Pay above four ceilings (€192,240) is not yet verified for CSG and CRDS. Amounts you enter as retirement or pre-tax contributions are taken from pay after tax, because no verified tax relief is modeled. Payroll software applies the ceilings month by month, which gives the same result as this annual calculation for a constant monthly salary. Payslips can differ by a few euros.
