HOW IT WORKS
Take-home pay is your gross salary minus the taxes and contributions withheld from it. In the United States that means federal income tax, state income tax where it applies, and FICA (Social Security and Medicare). In Canada it means federal and provincial income tax plus CPP/QPP and EI/QPIP. In the United Kingdom it means Income Tax and National Insurance, with Scotland using its own income tax bands.
Income tax is progressive: each rate applies only to the slice of income inside its bracket, so your effective rate is always lower than your marginal rate. Our calculators apply the 2026 rules published by the IRS, the CRA and HMRC, and show the line items behind every result.
